Pharmacological modulation of angiogenesis

Angiogenesis (the formation of blood vessels from pre-existing vascular plexus) is a finely controlled physiological process, the dysregulation of which is associated with numerous diseases, such as cancer, atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis or diabetic retinopathy. Therefore, pharmacological modulation of angiogenesis represents a therapeutic approach to these diseases.

Aim

Discovery of natural or synthetic molecules with angiogenesis modulating activity and characterization of their molecular mechanisms of action.

We make use of a wide variety of in vitro assays to study the different steps of the angiogenesis process, using primary human endothelial cells. We also use in vivo assays in different animal models (mouse, chick embryo and zebrafish) to evaluate the angiogenesis modulating activity of the compounds.
